Ungated inbound: why the download is no longer the starting point
The e-book in exchange for an email address was the backbone of inbound for years. Today it often delivers contacts who never meant to buy and puts off the ones who do. Inbound 2.0 flips the logic.

The problem with the form
A form in front of content answers one question: who wanted this document badly enough to hand over their details? That's not the same question as: who wants to buy? The result is MQL numbers that look good and sales teams whose follow-up emails reach students, consultants and competitors.
At the same time, the most interesting readers – decision makers informing themselves early – lose interest at the form gate.
What inbound 2.0 does differently
- Open content: the best knowledge is freely accessible. It should be read, shared and cited by AI assistants.
- Company-level signals: instead of a single email address, what counts is which companies are engaging with which topics – as far as that can be identified and is legally permissible.
- Conversation instead of download: the conversion point is a real next step: a diagnosis call, a check, a question.
- Agents in the background: when a fitting account shows interest, the loop runs: assess, research, buying center, prepared outreach.
Inbound 2.0 doesn't mean giving up data. It means collecting the right data – not the data that's easiest to get.
What it means for measurement
Dropping forms means losing a convenient metric. Other metrics become more important instead: pipeline from target accounts, share of deals with an inbound touch, time from first signal to conversation, quality of conversations. That's more honest – and it's what leadership wants to know anyway.
What you can test
Take your most downloaded gated asset and open it up for a period. Add a clear, low-friction next step at the end. Afterwards, don't compare the number of contacts – compare the number of qualified conversations and the pipeline from fitting accounts.
Where do you stand?
The agentic readiness check shows in 3 minutes how ready your marketing is for agents – and which gaps to close first.
